Welcome to the back country

Allow 25 minutes for the drive if the roads are clear, a little longer if it’s snowing or icy, or if you plan to stop along the way. Colorado Highway 131 is the highway heading north and south through Oak Creek. Take CO-Hwy 131 south into Phippsburg (about 4 miles further down the road from Oak Creek, farther from Steamboat, back towards Vail). When you get into the little railroad town of Phippsburg, keep an eye out for the Flat Tops Ranch Supply. The road you will take nearly all the way to us is just down the way from the Flat Tops Ranch Supply on the right side of the road. You will see a brown Forest Service Access sign and then there will be a right turn on CR 15. Directly across the street is a landscaping company called I-Design, so if you pass that sign, you just missed CR 15. Stay on this windy county road and you will see a sign for a “Y” and then a sign for Dunkley Pass. When you come to the Y (about 2.7 miles down CR 15), stay to the right. After the Y you will be on CR 132 (changes to dirt) and you will stay on this road all the way until it dead-ends at our trailhead. When you see a sign on your right for Routt National Forest you have less than 2 miles to go! Don’t be fooled by any trucks parked further down, you can’t miss us! We are in the truck full of dogs at the “Road Closed” sign. You will not be driving all the way to Dunckley Pass either; so don’t worry about signs with mileage on them for the top of Dunckley. If it’s a particularly snowy day, we can meet you at the Ranch Supply and lead you out to the trailhead for no additional charge. Remember, once you turn off of the highway you are heading down back country roads. Drive slowly and closer to the middle of the road to avoid getting pulled into a ditch, especially when there is fresh snow. We all take it slow around here in the wintertime; so don’t worry too much about taking your piece out of the middle. There is very little traffic around here.
